This month my selection is dedicated to celebrate the life and legacy of legendary drummer-percussionist Airto Moreira who was 80 on August 5th.
Pointless to introduce how quintessential Airto’s presence has been so far for working as a musician for about 60 years.
Airto’s unique style has influenced the direction of modern jazz around the world. His impact was so powerful that Downbeat magazine added the category of percussion to its readers and critics polls which he has won over twenty times since 1973 … the rest is history and with this selection, I wish Airto Moreira many happy returns and many more years of life celebrations to come.
